A Mental Challenge - Mobile phone media content (暫時置頂)

I am thinking about a very basic problem.

The holy grail of mobile content, is for people wanting their information or content presented on their mobile phone.

However, the biggest consideration of receiving information on a phone is how much easier for a user to wait to get to a desktop. If it is much better simply to get to a desk top to receive certain info, one would go to the desktop.

Therefore, this is the challenge I pose today... Please feel free to tell me in the comments section...

What kind of content do you rather prefer receiving on a phone than on a desktop.

Or in another words, what kind of information is better presented on a mobile device than at a desktop.

I give you all an example, I go clubbing with Ko Ming Fai of apple pie all the time. The information of "where ko ming fai is, in the club" is a piece of information I rather receive on a mobile device (because I am at the club) rather than at home or at work in front of the computer.

But this piece of information can be delivered to me via voice (because I can call him) or SMS. Also, this piece of info is only useful for me.

Here is the biggest challenge, are there any mass media type info or content, that would be better received on a phone vs a desktop?
And why would someone prefer that info on the phone vs the desktop?

I will leave this challenge open till Weds 9th July 11:30pm.

I will buy a lunch at Aspasia for person who came up with the best example. And we would be sipping champagne.

  1. That's easy.

Let's say if I am stuck in some places late at night that I haven't been before and would like to go home. If my phone can tell me ways that i can get home with (besides taxi of course) that would be very useful.

Or drawing on an experience from a friend a few weeks ago, she was stuck in traffic on her way to the airport because of the congestion caused by flooding in Tung Chung. It would be nice to know these kind of traffic information on the phone if I am about to make a journey.

And of course, the obvious piece of information that i wanted most would be some sort of background information of some gorgeous girls that happens to walk past me or sitting a few tables away in the bar. The sort of things that you can use as my opening line when approaching her.

As a pickup guru like u, Patman, this wouldn't be obvious. But as a novice like me, this is like gold.

  2. obviously-

for men- 141 information, say u 彈鐘, u need to search the internet quick, call another pimp to ice/fire u quick!

  3. such information must be presented at the mobile immediately the minute u 彈鐘...

u must be a hypocrite not to agree with me more.

  5. Dear KKL,

Let me paraphrase you. Traffic info is something more useful when received while driving (ie thru mobile) then at a desk thru a computer...

And for girls "due diligence", it would be useful if the girl is on facebook, have an open profile AND have told you the truth about details of her life so you can actually find her on facebook.

But must say, you are in the lead winning this competition

    ------------------------

Dear good slave + chris chan,

Remember, the focus is what info you rather receive thru mobile than desktop. Info such as where to eat + sex141 can all be procured before leaving one's desk.

Sex141 is more useful on mobile, if the girl you wanted were suddenly unavailable and you have to change.

As for where to eat, same. You suddenly find yourself at a restaurant with no more seating and you are really hungry so you change places.

Interesting ideas so far... Keep them coming. Aspasia is one fine restaurant.

  6. I will treat my mobile phone as an two-way 1) automatic searcher/receiver and an 2) sender of messages (which may be a select profile of information like Facebook if I am a person, or company profile if I am a company).
As for function 1), there is an advanced function of searching on keywords or category of information;also, those to-be collected information will be a "request" to the sender, and all those matches will be logged in your phone or in the "cloud" network. So each of us go home will have a list of requests for personal information (you can choose to release or not) (of course if you are a company longing for sales, you can set your information be open to public).

If you go to a business conference, you can preset your phone sensitive to namecards, so that anyone that you have been chatted with, will leave you a "bookmark", you can choose to ask their namecards afterwards (in your desktop at top, by virtue of cloud application or directly on your phone when you are less busy) in case you have forgotten to ask face-to-face. This of course can be applied to girl picking.

If you like to buy in bargain, you can set your sensor to discount coupons, so every time you pass a shop, a bookmark will be automatically logged, you can decide to manage it afterward at home.
Finally, this function should be helped by "locating"system, so that googlemap like kind of service can automatically detect where you can, and if you've set your sensor (i.e. automatic searcher) to certain things, your location + your request can bring you the most appropriate information you need at the moment at that specific location.

    Bravo

  7. Hi, I wrote a traffic timetable for Discovery Bay: db.tdw.hk. Basically, it shows you the time for ferries and buses for DB community.

It works for iPhone for now, and I'm looking to extend all the other kind of traffic and regions in future.

There are many other things that you wish you can access on mobile phones.... such as public toilets around your present location....

  10. (too late at night when I wrote the last post, I feel a bit ashame of my grammatical mistakes:P) - so I rewrite it but I am sure I still have a lot of errors..

I will treat my mobile phone as a two-way automatic 1) searcher/receiver (e.g. Person A/Shop A) and an 2) sender/owner (Person B/Shop B) of messages/profile (which may be a selected profile of information like Facebook if I am a person, or company profile if I am a company/shop).
As for function 1), there is an advanced function of searching by keywords or categories of information; also, those to-be-collected information will be in the form of a "request" to solicit information from the owner (Person B/Shop B), and all the information that matches the keywords will be logged in your phone or in the "cloud" network as a “bookmark”. So each of us (or company) go home (at their backoffice) will have a list of “requests” for personal/company information (you can choose whether to release the information or not to that particular person or information) (of course if you are a company longing for sales, or some of your personal information you don’t mind anybody get hold of e.g. “single” or “married” etc. you can set some of your information be open to public). With your permission, your specific information will be send and notify the solicitor.

For some specific example - If you go to a business conference, you can preset your phone sensitive (search for) to namecards, so that anyone that you have been chatted with, will leave you a "bookmark" automatically, you can choose to ask their namecards afterwards (in your desktop at home, by virtue of cloud application or directly on your phone when you are less busy) in case you have forgotten to ask face-to-face. This of course can be applied to girl picking. The logistic is like this – 所some定位 function between person /company A and person/company B, once the information matches, the targeted person will be “bookmarked”, then the solicitor can send on request by the cloud application afterward and wait for the owner of the information to reply; of course one can always filter the kind of “solicitor” by their attributes.

If you like to buy in bargain, you can set your sensor/automatic search to “discount coupons”, so every time you pass a shop that have subscribed to “advertisement”, a bookmark will be automatically logged into the phone of the potential customer – he or she can read through the coupons/adertisement happily at home.

As explained, this function should be made possible by "locating"system GPS 衛星定位/phone company, such that googlemap-like service can automatically detect where you are. So, once you've set your sensor (i.e. automatic searcher) to certain desire things, your location + your request can bring you the most appropriate information you need at the moment at that specific location. The other side of the coin is that once your “profile” is set – as a self-advertisement, or a company advertisement, or your criteria of soul mate (ha ha) you are always finding opportunities. One day you may meet your dream girl, dream boss, dream job ….
    :)

  11. “Are there any mass media type info or content, that would be better received on a phone vs a desktop?”
And why would someone prefer that info on the phone vs the desktop? Because birds of the same feather go together, people geographically nearby share similar interests, his very fact has already filtered off many irrelevancies. Put it simply, two persons go for the museum has a higher chance to get along well with each other, he or she may want to know someone that share the same interests. Those who are interested to listen to certain concerts, may also interested in something similar. Similarly, it is good to bombard him/her with advertisements/information that he might be interested by analyzing the characteristics of the locality where he or she is in.

    Bravo

  12. i wanna make it simple. As a man, only two factors would interest me:

    1. Woman
    2. Money

Woman ... 141 is surely appealing for those in need, downloadable porn clips available during toilet time would be lovely as well ~ (any good site for mobile .. hmmm ?)

$ ... for me ... i use mobile to check stock price / news etc. anytime (during meetings...) anywhere (in the toilet...) instead of desktop ... cos the privacy of your mobile is so high that ur boss wun find out ur 99% of time watching stock mkt (esp if you work in big corp where there are so many spyware monitoring your usage of PC)

    .....

i know it is not good enough for the lunch ... but it is wht i am doing right now and wht i believe you are doing right now ... haha

  13. Pakman,
    Here are some ideas:

For teens, what they concern the most are their friends. So the info of their friends are the most important. When they are out with their mobile phones, they can use msn or facebook to check whether their friends are available.

For drivers, the info on the road is the most precious. They can use google map to check the traffic condition (the function is available in US). The Transport department also provide live webcast and snapshots so that drivers can check out the traffic condition on all major roads.

Another function that google map can provide is the speed camera warning. Before the driver pass through speed cameras, it can warn the driver.

For hikers and campers, they can use their mobile phones to check the weather information on Hong Kong Observatory for Thunderstorm, landslide or rain warnings.

As Fitch said, we can use our mobile phones in the toilet. For enthusiastic readers, e-book may be a choice. Some may like to play Mahjong on-line.

By goodslave, where-to-eat info is important when we are out. Openrice is a good choice. They can add functions for mobile phone version like on-line booking.

For security purpose, one can install an IP camera at home and use mobile phone to check the condition at home. Users with a pet will find it very useful.

For financial needs, I suggest that the website of HKEX should have a mobile version as there are Latest Listed Company Information released. Yahoo finance and aastocks are good choices too.

For the gamblers, they can use their mobile phones so to search for odds or conditions of the horses. On-line betting can also be done by using mobile phones.

One crazy idea: for C9, their main jobs are going to wet markets to buy fresh vegetables, fish, meat, etc. How about setting up a wet market website for information about prices, goods sold by each vendor. It may well save time for C9 to bargain for lower prices.

    Any More Idea?

Here is a list of the information that can be provided on mobile devcices:
    MSN
    Facebook
    Google map
    Traffic snapshots/ live webcast
    Speed camera warning
    Weather warnings
    Public transport (KMB,MTR)
    E-book
    Mahjong
    Openrice
    IP-camera (CCTV)
    Hong Kong Exchange and Clearing
    Yahoo! Finance, aastocks
    Hong Kong Jockey Club
    Wet market information

    Webpages that can be used:
    http://traffic.td.gov.hk/selection_c.htm
    http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/index.htm
    http://www.hko.gov.hk/contentc.htm
    http://maps.google.com/
    http://www.aastocks.com/chi/default.aspx
    http://www.hkex.com.hk/index.htm

    Of course,
http://phatdat.blogspot.com/ must be a content to be received on mobile phone so that all 白銀戰隊 members can get your messages anytime, everywhere.

  14. I totally agreed with Jeff's saying.

If there is any information which is attractive to all

    1) geographic information
    - there is available tables in restaurants in Central or pubs at night
    2) urgent news such as driving info and urgent stock news
    3) something can kill time while you travelling such as news, online show such as 你貼股我教路 = )
4)something that is not convenient to read at desptop at home or in office (some horny websites or youtube video which are not supposed to read at home or in office)

  15. so simple, what is important is not about the content or information, its about the user.
If he or she is mobile always e.g. sales staff of course they prefer to receive the content via the phone.
so many people are so busy in this never sleeping IFC,
when u are back home , u go straight to dream on your bed, its so good. no need turn on the pc, everythings done way back home. ha ha

  18. Dear all,

I must say that if asked, you guys really can come up with some funky ideas for mobile application.

At the very least, what can be ported from the desktop to the mobile phone.

Anyhow, after looking at all the suggestions. The one service that will make me jump up and subscribe immediately was suggested by xiaolucia... Who suggested...

"real time entrance count of night venues/parties. Total entrants number with gender distribution. "

So Xiao, you are the winner.

Write me "pie at appledaily.com" to collect your prize. One fab lunch at Aspasia.
